Laptop Running Slow? Here Are 3 Things to Try Right Now

A slow laptop is frustrating, especially when you only wanted to check email or print a letter. The good news is that many slowdowns are caused by everyday clutter rather than a broken machine. Before you assume the worst, these three checks are safe for beginners and often make a noticeable difference.

1. Restart the laptop properly

Shut the laptop down fully, wait ten seconds, then switch it back on. This clears temporary glitches and frees up memory that apps have been hogging in the background.

2. Close what you are not using

If you have lots of browser tabs, old documents, and programmes sitting open, the laptop has to work harder. Close anything you do not need right now. If you are not sure what something is, leave it open and ask later rather than guessing.

3. Check for pending updates

On Windows, open Settings, then Windows Update, and see if anything is waiting to install. Install updates when you have time to let the machine finish. Plug it in if you can.

Check your storage space

A laptop that is nearly full can slow down in ways that feel mysterious. Open Settings, then System, then Storage. If the bar is almost full, move photos, videos, or old files to an external drive or cloud storage.

When to get help

Call for support if startup takes several minutes every time, programs freeze every few minutes, the laptop makes clicking or grinding noises, or basic tidying does not help. Those are jobs for a technician, not a late-night forum thread.
